It seems like an easy scenario but sadly the simple yet necessary skill of how to love yourself escapes many of us and this is indeed a tragedy.
Whether we admit it or not, all human beings crave love and affection. We consciously and also subconsciously look for love each and every day until we find it. Like moths to a flame, we are drawn to the possibility or chance that we may actually find the perfect dream that is love.
There is a major obstacle to finding love in the way of many people however. That roadblock is in fact a persons inability to know how to love yourself!
Yes it’s true! There is not a person in the world who will really and truly experience true love without a good and healthy amount of self love. This is not the kind of “too good for you” and head up your butt self love but a genuine appreciation and satisfaction of your true self and self worth. It means that you are comfortable in your own skin, can look in the mirror and be happy and know deep within yourself that you are a good person.
If you cannot look at yourself in such a way and know how to love yourself then how can you expect someone else to? You are destined to never fully being able to open yourself up to and therefore receive the joy and fulfillment of true love that lasts the test of time.
In essence, I believe that healthy self love is actually a lot like having confidence and good self esteem. In fact as I think about it, I believe that it is nearly exactly the same thing when it comes to your opinion of yourself and your worth.
So with this in mind, let us work on increasing your self confidence so you can truly love yourself!
Firstly, if your inability know how to love yourself or low self esteem stems from an abusive or ill meaning relationship, be it from a partner or family member, you must do all you can to remedy that first and banish the demons that they have left behind. Really get down and analyze the issues to see if you can acknowledge they are untrue and unfounded.
Practice in front of a mirror the following very powerful technique and test. Look directly into the mirror and count backwards from 10 looking at yourself right in the eyes and staring deep into your soul. If you cannot make it all the way to 1, then remember what you were thinking about that made you turn away and focus on solving that problem. Once you have mastered the ten count, try and go backwards from 20!
In learning how to love yourself, you should also practice relaxation and meditation techniques. Not only will these activities relax, invigorate and soothe your mind and soul but the intent of clearing out your mind will ensure you are fully aware of what is bothering you and what you need to pay some attention to. Knowing what our issues are is half the battle!
Make sure you make and maintain good eye contact with everyone you meet and interact with. You will be surprised at how good it makes you feel and also be amazed at the amount of people that then break eye contact from you as a result of their own issues!
Have an “attitude of gratitude”. This means really being thankful for everything you do already have and appreciating everything and everyone around you.
Make sure you are in a space that is accepting of love sent your way. Don’t downgrade or disregard compliments, don’t belittle yourself or self sabotage and ensure you are open to all facets of love and friendship.
Understand and believe that you really are deserving of love! You are a truly unique and wonderful example of a human being! You have skills, traits and abilities different to everyone else in the entire world!
When it comes to relationships, everyone wants to be paired with a confident and self loving partner. Displaying this confidence and self love not only attracts potential partners but also ensures they are happier within the relationship and less likely to stray!
The mind for some reason or another is constantly imposing limitations upon itself. It is this reason, which I believe is an inbuilt challenge to make sure we continue to evolve and develop, that we must strive forward and know in our hearts that we are worth something!
We all know that self-discovery is a lifelong process, but there is no better time than today to get started on the journey to a better you. Learning how to love yourself ultimately creates opportunities for love and success and as a result we become more confident which breeds more and more love, success and happiness.
Whether we talk individually about confidence, healthy self love or self esteem matters not as they are all closely related in my book.
